1 Samuel 28:1-6
Lost in the jungle, a man sought desperately to find his way to safety. He was losing his strength quickly as the heat and insects were robbing him of his life. Suddenly, he thought he heard a bell ringing in the distance. Believing he was near a village, he traveled onward but never seemed to get closer to the bell. Finally, he fell on the ground exhausted, never to rise again. The mysterious bellbird had claimed another victim. G.B. Robinson says that many a traveler in the heart of the rainforest of Central and South America has been led to his death by the uncanny call of this seldom seen bird. Its enticing toll produces an almost overpowering temptation to seek its source.
David has followed the bellbird into Philistine territory, if you please. Fatigue and fear have taken their toll in his life. Doubt of God’s care has replaced faith. He now looks to the heathen enemies of God’s people for refuge. David thought he had security, peace, and calm in his enemy’s care. He is about to find out, however, that there is a price for compromise.
